“We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know”
Carl Rogers
The process of psychotherapy can help guide us through the many challenges, changes, and uncertainties that life throws up for us and takes us on a journey of inner discovery and awareness leading to increased well-being, balance, insight and clarity. Whatever your reason for seeking therapy, the commitment to working on your emotional health is a deeply rewarding one, and the benefits can last a lifetime.
Body psychotherapy can help clients learn to regulate emotions when feelings become too intense for comfort.
Clients can come to know feelings through the body’s actual sensations rather than thinking through them. They can learn to recognise emotions and begin to explore or express them more safely or openly. No amount of talking about fearful feelings can convince a truly frightened body that it is safe. It needs to experience the feelings of safety.
Attending therapy for the first time can seem daunting; this is entirely natural. We offer a safe, confidential place for clients to explore their experiences and difficulties; we start by discussing what brings you to therapy and how we might work together to support you and your specific needs. Our work together will draw on a combination of therapeutic approaches, including Biodynamic and Integrative psychotherapy.

”Trauma is not what happens to us but what we hold inside, in the absence of an empathetic witness.”
Peter Levine
Integrative psychotherapy is a form of talk-therapy that draws on different theories depending on the person’s needs. It aims to bring a greater sense of balance to one’s life and is based on the idea that each of us holds the key to our own healing and wellbeing; we each possess the innate potential to address our difficulties in order to come to live more harmoniously.
Body or Biodynamic Psychotherapy helps us understand how emotions and stress are held in the body over the course of a lifetime. Biodynamic refers to the concept of life energy flowing naturally in a healthy body. This flow of energy is either supported or disturbed by our personal life experiences. The more it becomes disturbed, the less healthy and well we feel physically and psychologically. We all have habitual ways of carrying stress and tension, which can lead to different holding patterns in the body and what is known as our armoured posture. Folk wisdom acknowledges this in phrases like ‘carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders.’ These holding patterns are generally unconscious and automatic for a person. Body psychotherapy explores these, by working with the breath, movement and touch. In doing so, we bring these patterns to consciousness and by bringing them to awareness a person can begin to better understand themselves.
There are many reasons for people to begin this journey of self-discovery; most people initially seek support because of a known area of difficulty such as relationship breakdown; interpersonal difficulties; bereavement/loss; domestic abuse; childhood trauma: challenging psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders: difficulty coping with the demands of stressful life stages; as well as a diverse range of sexuality and identity issues.
Our sessions are confidential. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to arrange an initial session, where we can discuss what brings you to therapy and how we might work together to best support you.
